This room contains of a beginner level CTF challenge. We have 4 task to complete here. https://tryhackme.com/room/c4ptur3th3fl4g

[Task 1] Translation & Shifting

1.1

Question: c4n y0u c4p7u23 7h3 f149?

This seems like the mix of numbers and alphabets. Let’s just replace all the digits with alphabets matching the shape of these numbers.

Ans: *a* *o* *a*ture t*e *lag?

1.2

Question: 01101100 01100101 01110100 01110011 00100000 01110100 01110010 01111001 00100000 01110011 01101111 01101101 01100101 00100000 01100010 01101001 01101110 01100001 01110010 01111001 00100000 01101111 01110101 01110100 00100001

For solving this lets use CyberChef :https://gchq.github.io/CyberChef/

Ans: Refer the site and see the image below. I’m sure you are brilliant enough to solve it

1.2

1.3

Question: MJQXGZJTGIQGS4ZAON2XAZLSEBRW63LNN5XCA2LOEBBVIRRHOM======

let’s use CyberChef itself to solve this one too. This seems like a Base32 encrypted code,Let’s crack it !!.

Ans: Refer the site (CyberChef) and see the image below. I’m sure you are brilliant enough to solve it

1.3

1.4

Question: RWFjaCBCYXNlNjQgZGlnaXQgcmVwcmVzZW50cyBleGFjdGx5IDYgYml0cyBvZiBkYXRhLg==

Ans: This one seems like a base64, Let’s use the same CyberChef to solve this case too.

1.4

1.5

Question: 68 65 78 61 64 65 63 69 6d 61 6c 20 6f 72 20 62 61 73 65 31 36 3f

Ans: By observing the code this seems like a hexadecimal code, CyberChef again :)

1.5

1.6

Question: Ebgngr zr 13 cynprf!

Ans: The 13 itself is a clue here. lets try ROT13 conversion. Here the alphabets are sifted 13 places to the actual alphabets. CyberChef again :)

1.6

1.7

Question: *@F DA:? >6 C:89E C@F?5 323J C:89E C@F?5 Wcf E:>6DX

Ans: This is similar to the ROT13 encoding. Here we are using ROT47, the only difference here is it uses all characters in the ASCII encoding table, A-Z, 0–9, punctuation, and so on.

1.7

1.8

Question : - . .-.. . -.-. — — — — ..- -. .. -.-. .- — .. — — -.

. -. -.-. — — -.. .. -. — .

Ans: On and Off, Yes it’s a Morse code.

1.8

1.9

Question: 85 110 112 97 99 107 32 116 104 105 115 32 66 67 68

Ans: This seems like a binary coded decimal number, let’s try decimal decoder.

Ans: I didn’t expect that! Don’t panic,computers can do anything ;)

well,This is a combination of Base64 -> Morse code -> Binary ->ROT47 -> Decimal.

This question was designed to make sure we were paying attention, the original message was in Base 64, as one can tell from the mixture of upper and lower case characters. this decoded into Morse, which itself decoded into Binary, which then decoded into a ROT47 cipher, which THEN decoded to decimal, case closed.

These kind of challenges are very common in CTF, We need a little logical thinking here.

[Task 2] Spectrograms

Download the file

A spectrogram is a visual representation of the spectrum of frequencies of a signal as it varies with time. When applied to an audio signal, spectrograms are sometimes called sonographs, voiceprints, or voicegrams. When the data is represented in a 3D plot they may be called waterfalls.

The file is in .wav format, let’s download a software called sonic visualiser.

Download link: https://www.sonicvisualiser.org/download.html

Open the .wav file in the sonic visualiser (fig 2.1)

2.1

After that Layer-> select Add spectrom (shift +G).(fig 2.2)

2.2

Flag is here.

[Task 3] Steganography

Steganography is the technique of hiding secret data within an ordinary,non-secret,file or message in order to avoid detection;the secret data is then extracted at its destination. The use of steganography can be combined with encryption as extra step for hiding or protecting data.

3.1 download the file.

open the file, we can see a cute little dino in noodles(fig 3.2),that’s strange. let’s use our Steganography skills to solve the case.

3.2

let’s use the steghide tool to solve the case.

sudo apt-get install steghide

steghide extract -sf stegosteg.jpeg

For the passphrase just press enter(fig 3.3),a file will automatically be created on the same directory(fig 3.4),just open it and see for the secret message.

3.3
3.4

Open the file to see the flag

[Task 4] Security through obscurity

Security through obscurity is the reliance in security engineering on the secrecy of the design or implementation as the main method of providing security for a system or component of a system

download this file 4.0

It is a meme.jpg file, There are many methods to solve this case. let’s do an easy method, lets just use cat command.

cat meme.jpg

as you can see both the flags showed up here(fig 4.2).
